Religious Education is taught throughout
Years 7-11 in mixed ability groups. At the
moment it is not offered as a GCSE option
although this is something we hope to develop
in the near future.
The department is staffed by one full time
teacher and two part time members.
The main aim of the R.E. Department is
to develop a spirit of tolerance and understanding
of the beliefs, views and experiences of
others. Students are encouraged to listen
to the opinions of others but at the same
time express their own beliefs and ideas.
This is of vital importance in our world
today if we are to avoid prejudice and misunderstanding.
At KS3 we cover the six major world religions
through a study of selected aspects of these
world faiths eg.,Rites of Passage, Festivals,
Holy Scriptures. KS4 offers students the
chance to explore, discuss and evaluate
some of the important moral issues in our
society while looking at the responses of
the major world faiths to these issues.
Some of the topics covered include Crime
and Punishment, Euthanasia, Abortion, War
and Peace.
The methods used in teaching this curriculum
are varied. Although some activities are
based on learning facts and figures and
structured written work, we also use debate,
research, drama, open discussion and art
as approaches to learning.
